I'm Yuqi, a San Francisco-based designer with a master's in architecture and urban design at Columbia University, and a human friend of 3 famous rabbits with 3000 followers on social media.

My Story

Before I am a professional designer @WRNSstudio/@Walt Disney Imagineering/ Aecom

I was a founding member of the first fab lab in shanghai, a TEDx speaker, a journalist, and even interned at Tesla‘s sales department for a few days.

My TEDx Speaker Story:

Long story short. I studied physics for one year at Tongji University, then decided to change my major to industrial design for better school life.

Because of my background, one of the professors offered me the chance to conduct research on the "maker movement". Luckily the research hits the trend and with the support from the Dean, I  turned the report into a proposal and successfully lead a student group to establish the Fablab-Shanghai, a maker space that promotes digital fabrication such as 3D printing techniques. With this experience, I had the honor of being one of the selected speakers at TEDx Youth in Suzhou, in 2014.

The feeling of being a TEDx speaker was extremely unique. And I can't wait to find my next topic for the bigger TED talk stage (the goal hasn't been achieved yet).

My journalism Experience:

I left fablab-shanghai and joined a storytelling platform called China30s.com. I was the first UI designer to help them set up the visual identity, worked with award-winning publishing housing for new books, and facilitated the writer workshops. I also did a few exclusive interviews. My top 3 popular interviews are:

a Beijing Opera actor famous for his street dancing

a musician who works on collecting the sound of nature

and an architect who renovated his 50sf condo to be a multi-functional space.

My Volunteering Experience:

Besides studying and full-time job, I love to contribute my design skills to improve the community life @San Francisco, @New York,@Shanghai

-I currently work with 826 Valencia to design a reading room for SF Int High School! You are welcome to join our workshop and donate your time and furniture!

-I worked as a UX designer for New York City Major's action plan: facilitated and documented weekly meetings with residents at NYCHA housing.

To Be Continued:

Those experience has shepherded my understanding of the integrity of the design process and how to empathize with the users and clients. In my design philosophy, the foundation is to learn and create for a better self and world.

Would love to share my favorite quote from the book <fountainhead>:

“Patience is always rewarded and romance is always round the corner!”

Being patient listening to users' needs, communicating with the stakeholders, and using creative thinking to polish the product will finally lead you to the place that you are proud of.

I'm always looking for new and exciting opportunities. Let's connect.
