Effortlessly Create Job Descriptions
Fast-and-easy Personalization
Regenerate! Regenerate! Regenerate!
Problem Statement:
User Persona:
A Typical User Journey:
Starting
Realizes the need for a resume to apply for jobs.
Trying
Searches online for resume builders and templates. Starts drafting the resume but struggles with structuring experiences.
Conflicting
Goes through multiple rounds of revisions but remains unsatisfied.Feels frustrated and unsure if the resume meets employer expectations.
Quitting
Overwhelmed by the difficulty of articulating experiences effectively. Feels stuck in the job search process.
Pain Points:
''Blank Page Issue'
Have difficulty translating experience into compelling resume content and unsure about using the right words and formatting for maximum impact.
Lack of Personalized Guidance
Career center advice and online resources feel generic and not tailored to their situation.
Lack of Confidence
The process feels overwhelming and discouraging after repeated failed attempts.
Competitive Analyasis:
I conducted competitive audits of AI-branded products and top competitors identified through SEO/SEM searches, analyzing their writing support features — whether expert-provided or AI-generated — to assess the overall landscape and identify emerging patterns in AI-driven writing assistance.
Competitive Usability Evaluation:
Collaborate with research team to conduct competitive testing to evaluate writing solutions in the job seekers' market, uncovering gaps and opportunities to enhance our products.
Research Insights:
The biggest challenge our users face is writing descriptions that make their resumes stand out and look appealing.
Additionally, nearly half of these users have never created a resume before.
44%
44% of users do not have a resume at all and are truly starting from scratch (blank page issue)
41%
41% of users consider description of their experience and skills was the biggest writing challenge
23%
23% of users have used AI to build their resumes or enhance resume content with AI services like ChatGPT.
Conclusion:
AI trends in Career tool industry
70% of major competitors already use AI technology to help users create resumes, including generating specific sections and offering AI-guided resume building.
AI trends reach even light users
AI tools have become an integral part of job seekers' resume-creation activities exclusively focused on the content-customization ones.
Shift in Perspective: AI is helpful
30% participants were sceptical about using AI to create resumes but changed their minds during the session. They were particularly impressed with the contextuality of the features and the ability to edit and mix the generated content.
Strategy Making:
We analyzed the entire product funnel to identify the optimal areas for integrating AI writing assistance tools.
In this projdct I led the design for "create with AI" feature, and collaborated with a senior product design on "enhance"feature.
AI Logic for Generating Job Descriptions:
We plan to provide a complimentary service where users can share their experience in any format or their own words, and we transform it into ready-to-use content.
Current Experience:
Our product provides users with job-specific, pre-written content crafted by certified resume writers.
Business Value of Examples (ATS)
Most users find it valuable. Users who added the example have a higher conversion rate, so we’ll keep the feature to support growth.
Challenge 1:
Lo-fi exploration: Where to place this feature in limited screen?
Design Feedback:
"AI is here to help, not to shine"
The AI tool is not meant to compete with existing functionality.
Option 1 placed a widget above the job description area will push it further down, negatively impacting users who prefer to either use pre-written bullets or write their own content.
"Ensure high visibility"
Displaying this functionality only when keyboard mode is triggered reduces its visibility and may confuse users who intend to type their own content.
Lo-fi exploration: Content switcher
Design Feedback
Less "Tap" is more
Team align on Option 1-Tab header which ensures users have equal access to all writing assistance features, whether powered by AI or crafted by human experts.
Next Step:
"Exploring Trigger Modes and User Flow for the AI Tool":
1. How do we guide users through the experience?
2. How to prompt them to input their own words?
3. How to enable them to add the generated content to their resume?
Final Design Options for A/B Test
After two rounds of internal design sync, we agreed on two options to trigger the AI feature.
Option 1: Button within the editor
Option 2: Tab Switcher within the sheet
Challenge 2:
Industry Common Pattern:
I analyzed examples from products like Meta AI, Apple Intelligence, Amazon, and LinkedIn to identify the most commonly used patterns for AI implementation.
Learnings:
Prompt Logic
When designing prompts that require user input to generate content, it's important to include a dialogue input area for typing.
Text Input Field
Unlike search bars typically placed at the top of the page, text input fields for AI are often positioned at the bottom for easier thumb access.
Unhappy Path
When users are dissatisfied with AI-generated content, the most common ways to help them modify it include regeneration, follow-up prompts...
Trigger Mode: Sheet Variant
Trigger Mode: Modal
Modals provide focused experience by overlaying content on current screen, helping users concentrate on the specific task without being distracted by the existing content.
Interactive prototype for usability testing (unmoderated)
Test Variant 1 : AI Sheet
Test Variant 2:AI Modal
Test Variant 3: AI Tab
Test Summay:
32 job seekers interacted each with one version of the prototype, used the Expert-recommended section and then the AI Write it for me feature. Before clicking, they explained how they imagined the tool to work, shared their feedback, as well as interacted with the tool following some tasks.
Perception Difference:
Key insight: Users perceive a notable difference between pre-written examples and AI-generated descriptions.
Personalization
4 users think pre-written suggestions as more general. In contrast, they see the Idea Generator as producing more unique, personalized responses based on individual input.
Trust in Source
3 users believe pre-written suggestions are crafted by real people, adding credibility. They view AI-generated content as created on demand and influenced by the specific input.
User Preferences
4 users noted that pre-written suggestions are helpful for initial inspiration, while the AI is preferred for refining specific ideas or communicating unique accomplishments.
Iterated design based on learnings:
Pagination VS. Vertical Scrolling
Mobile user prefers a more intuitive method, like scrolling, to view the content, rather than relying on pagination.
1. Display one option at a time with scrolling, with up to 3 times.
2. Replace the "accept" CTA with a "+" icon for users to add the text to their resume.
Add a Nudge Notification
1. If users can't find a pre-written example, they can scroll to the 10th example, then swipe up to see a prompt suggesting the "idea generator."
2. Based on data, 50% of users reach the 10th example, so the threshold is set to 10.
Design a scalable framework
I explored ideas that enable the integration of a series of AI-powered tools, including 'create,' 'enhance,' and more.
The PM and AI service team provided feedback and shared ideas based on the designs.
Winning Variant - Floating button + Sheet
37% of users engaged with the feature.
86% of them added AI-genearted content
The conversion rate is 39% higher ↑
My Key Takeaways
1. Always prioritize understanding the user problem, in consideration of user segments.
2. Engage stakeholders early and keep them informed at every milestone.
3. In AI projects, focus on user-centered solutions—AI is a tool, not the spotlight.
4. Think big, ensuring scalability and responsive design.
